A couple of days ago I noticed that my Google Pagerank had dropped from a 2/10 to a 0/10, devastated I went in search of answers as to why this had happened and to find out if Google Pagerank is as important as many people portray.
Google PageRank is determined by the number of links that are pointing towards your website, this isn’t the only factor of how your page is ranked, Google has it’s own calculations which are known only to them.
Pagerank is displayed in the google toolbar as values from 0 – 10 even if your page displays as a “0″ your page still holds pagerank, lower than “0″ will show as unranked. As you build content on your site, your PageRank will increase.
Just recently, many websites have either gained/dropped in Google pagerank, those who have lost Google pagerank are becoming concerned.
Many people use the google toolbar which has the pagerank tool incorporated so they can keep an eye on their pagerank, remember ……. actual Google pagerank is important, yet the Google toolbar pagerank is NOT!
The pagerank in the browser toolbar, is not the actual pagerank that Google holds for your website. The toolbar pagerank is not updated in real time therefore it doesn’t provide you with real statistics of your ranking.
The Google toolbar page rank is not a true indication of pagerank, even if it were recently updated.
Losing page rank could be the fact that Google is talking into account paid backlinks for which Google is now discounting. Paid back links will cause a drop in actual pagerank.
I am aware of many cases and my own that a noticeable drop in Google toolbar pagerank has come about without having any paid back links.
As the Google toolbar pagerank does not give an accurate reading, I would suggest that you concentrate on building your backlinks from good quality websites. Keep your main Focus on the quality of the websites that link to you.

Greetings Tara, Still hopping oil rigs here – it all takes time, eh? Re Google page ranking. I had the No.1 spot in Google for a few days for the search of “Alex Jeffreys Video Competition” because I have been heavily promoting it on my blog. I have 3 dedicated pages containing ALL the students’ entries, so they could be viewed in one place. After a while my ranking dropped back to page 2. I made another post to my blog and up I went again to No. 1 so I realized that the secret is to keep posting stuff to stay no. 1. Today I was No. 2. So it goes to show that one has to keep working on it daily! If anyone knows any other secrets to this, we’d love to hear from you.
I was also wondering if your recently added video is your entry into the Alex Jeffreys Video Competition? It’s a great concept & rather touching, too. If it is your entry you might consider adding a few things to qualify: adding alex’s website marketingwithyou dotcom to your video and also putting it up on your blog. What a great Christmas gift you were given! If you make the changes I’ll feature your video in the showcase on my blog. Also I’ll add your blog to my blogroll. Can you do the same for me please. Ta. Cheers, Gaielle
