For four days just before Christmas my computer began to do strange things, I lost google search, couldn’t load gmail or youtube, I could load any other page, I went on a search to find out what was going on……I came across another few posts in yahoo search where they had experienced the same thing only this was in August 2008.
My computer became very slow, it took forever to load a page, even though I had no other programs running…It kept giving me a blue screen and crashing…I then went in search for a solution…
Was it a virus??? what was going on? I have the full version of AVG and their Firewall, what was I supposed to be looking for? I downloaded the free version of Ad-aware…nope came up clean, I ran ccleaner, and also their new defragler program, nope still no joy. I downlaoded Trend Micro nope again Nothing, I downloaded and ran Spybot search and destroy….Nope Nothing
I went to c drive and cleaned off some of my big programs, dreamweaver, photoshop and expression web, it didn’t give me any extra space, my c drive was full….I was beside myself.
I couldn’t download anything to my c drive……what was lurking in there?
On the fifth day I was considering buying a new computer or laptop, yet I felt so down that I was defeated….
So in the end I called my Dad and told him what was going wrong with my computer..he has a computer whiz who he knows…..Thank You Daddy
His name is Richard, he asked me to tell him the size of the 3 main folders
My windows folder came up as 13.9GB, he said that it looked pretty big, and went to check his,
he only had 3.5GB and the same updates.
So then I had to give him access to my computer…..omg have you ever seen anything so weird, I watched him take over my mouse and check out the files, he went through the windows files and they wouldn’t add up, then he went through them 5 at a time.
He found it the installer file was 10 GB alone, I sat and watched him google the files and all of em were not needed….well that was easy LOL. He then got me to download Malwarebytes, and told me to run it overnight, I have so much on my computer it was taking a while, so Off I went to bed, a lot happier than when I began the day, the next morning I got up and there were two problems which had been deleted by the Malwarebytes program, this is another free program.
Richard has a site of computer gadgets and do it yourself tips if you are interested you can visit him here RMCybernetics, Richard really knows his stuff.
Now that my computer was back to normal, I decided to change the settings, for some reason windows automatic updates keeps trying to download service pack1 to my computer, only I already have it, so I took off automatic updates, as I believe that a lot of the windows installer files had something to do with this
I then went to Youtube and found a video on how to speed up my computer, this one is fantastic a complete walk through of everything you don’t need running and how to speed up windows xp.

Tara Dear,
Keep Automatic Updates turned off. They open the gates to a world of hurt and you don’t need a lot of updates anyway. They’ll come up with a Service Pack for you a few months down the line.
All the Best!

Yep I will do, but how do I get rid of that annoying reminder on my tool bar that says its turned off, it is like a red shield with a cross on it. Any Suggestions?

Hey Tara
Wow, that sounded like some scary moments there with your computer. It’s a good job you have a wonderful dad who can fix your pc problems for you and wooaah it sounds really scary if somebody else can get control of your pc *shivers down my back*
Anyway, great to see you back up and running, I’m assuming you run XP? Did you know SP3 has come out recently for XP and recently like you I had an update for them, except the only probs is my comp is giving my blue screens every few day or like this weekend every 10-12 hours.
I reckon it’s Microsoft’s attempt to get us all to move to Vista
All the best
Nigel
